first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

A quiet huff in response to Chivy, then Sefton turned to the man and quickly considered his options. He could make a fuss about his name, or go with the flow and try to stay under the radar as much as possible. Despite his insistence on not letting Chivy know his name, it would cause a much larger problem if he acted suspiciously to an adult.

Swallowing his pride, he mumbled, "Sefton."

Sefton ignored Chivy, instead turning the conversation in another direction before he had a chance to comment. "And he's Chivy. May I ask your name?"

Sefton sighed to himself once Neal was out of the room. A doctor's appointment was the last thing he wanted at the moment, but he just couldn't seem to find a way to weasel his way out of it.

Sliding his gaze over to Chivy, he said, "Stop that."

"He didn't trip over me, for one," Sefton replied.

Sefton rolled his eyes and sat further back in the chair he had claimed. "And what if I said I did?" Of course, it wasn't nearly as specific as that. However, anyone who was getting overly friendly and close without knowing his name ran the risk of being even worse with such a connection. The fact that he had continued to run into Chivy only cemented the fact that telling him his name would end badly. Too bad he hadn't had much of a choice a few minutes ago, or he never would have given in.

"It's just common sense," Sefton replied without properly thinking first. Ugh, being sick was really messing with him, wasn't it?
polarization: (〉 that is just so typically me)

"Only if you're Sefton," he agreed. Then, added quietly, "But it's still common sense, whether you understand or not."

Sefton gave him a look. "It wasn't raining when I fell asleep."

"It was... a little overcast," he replied. "That's all."

Sefton took the opportunity to escape, and stood once Neal reentered. "Thank you," he said gratefully, if a bit unenthusiastic about it all.
polarization: (〉 but it doesn't mean that i'm serious)

Sefton took a seat at the table, opposite of Chivy, seeming genuinely relieved at the food. "I'm sure it will, if the smell is anything to go by," he said politely.

Sefton nodded quietly in agreement while he poked at it, eating only about two-thirds of what he had on his plate. His stomach was both incredibly hungry and acting up over any food he ate at all, which made it hard for Sefton to find the right balance.
