first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

"Wh-what?" Sefton nearly squeaked, suddenly scooting away purely out of instinct. In his mind, whenever a policeman took someone down to the station, they would grab them by the arm and generally weren't very gentle about dealing with suspicious persons, which was always the last thing Sefton wanted. (Though, to be fair, a lot of the image was the product of television and other media. That didn't make the prospect any more welcoming, however.)

Sefton froze. "I wasn't... wasn't going to," he mumbled, voice getting progressively quieter. "Promise."

Sefton carefully raised himself to his feet, eyes downcast, mind racing. He wasn't even sure what he was thinking about, aside from the fact that he was so very screwed.

Sefton's questioning had gone much the same. He remembered to mention he had no actual relation to the kid with all of the junk on hand, but it didn't seem to help his case much. He had been jumpy all over the place, he knew, but he couldn't help but fear affecting even more people today—especially police officers.

In the end, he was stuck in a cell with the promise of attempting to contact his parents, since he had refused to give them any sort of contact information. Sefton couldn't quite his terror at the prospect, and blearily found the darkest corner in the cell to shove himself in.

This couldn't be happening.

"They're gonna find my parents," was Sefton's haunted reply. With his head leaning up against the wall, it was hard to tell if he was looking at Chivy or not, but he definitely knew who it was he was talking to.

Sefton shook his head a little. "No, 'course not. But they said... they needed to get in contact." He grunted and lightly smacked his head against the wall. It didn't seem to do much at all aside from give him some sort of outlet.
polarization: (〉 that is just so typically me)

A derisive scoff. "Don't bother." After a moment he added, quieter, "It's probably too late now, anyway."
polarization: (〉 they're gonna throw it back to you)

[personal profile] polarization 2009-12-13 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Why's that?" Sefton asked, more to humor Chivy than anything. It seemed he was already resigning himself to the fact and was sinking into himself as a result.

"Dunno about you," he said, sighing quietly, "but I don't think they're gonna let a runaway just go back to running."

"Dunno. Doubt it'd be hard, though."

"Finding people."

Sefton paused, hearing some sort of opening in Chivy's statement... and rejected it. He didn't want to get even closer than he already was. "So would you."
