first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

Sefton had been about ready to walk away, but he found himself pausing at the question. "I'll figure something out," he eventually said. "They're not too bad without the splinters in them."

"Yeah." With a nod, he started to walk once again and disappeared down the pathway into the slowly waking city around them.

... TEN DAYS LATER

[personal profile] polarization 2009-10-07 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Sefton sighed. The day had just been dragging on much too long. First, his original job had been canceled, since the person he had been filling in for unexpectedly returned to work. Now that he had moved on to the second job earlier than planned, he was being run all around the city to deliver small packages, or pick up lunches, or anything the employer could think of, really.

Stepping up the elevated part of the sidewalk that would lead to the busier district, a flash of something shiny caught his eye, and he turned to look automatically. Then, he found himself regretting it. It was that guy—Chivy—again. What were the odds? America wasn't a small country by any means, yet they continued to run into each other more and more frequently, despite Sefton's best efforts to try new traveling companies and take different routes to his eventual destination.

What was he doing, anyway? It looked like he was trying to convince the man he was talking to of... something, with some shiny objects jangling around in his hands.

Unfortunately for Sefton, he had continued walking even after spotting Chivy—and bumped into someone equally as distracted as he. With an unexpected yelp and a failed attempt at regaining his balance, Sefton slipped off the side walkway onto the unassuming passerby below.

Sefton groaned, feeling where his elbow had smacked itself into the pavement. It didn't feel broken, but he was pretty sure it had started to bleed, if that wasn't just the pain messing with his nerves. "Ow," he muttered, trying to roll onto his side so that he could stand up.

Someone made a noise from underneath him, and Sefton scrambled to get off and move away. The person he had landed on sat up, rubbing his head with one hand, but reached out and grabbed Sefton's wrist with another. "H-hey... Are you okay?" The question was completely sincere, as was the man's somewhat pained but worried expression, and Sefton was pretty sure his heart cracked just a little further.

Breathless, Sefton nodded and tried to tug his hand away from the man. "Y-yeah, I'm okay. Sorry. I'm sorry, but I have to... go. Somewhere. Not here"

Around the just about the same time, Sefton had managed to wrest his wrist free and make a break for it. The crowd currently occupied with the remains of Chivy's stash made the getaway easy, but unfortunately the only completely open path was to follow after the retreating pack-rat. Sefton mentally groaned, but saved his breath for escaping.

Only a few moments later, and Sefton grudgingly appeared in the alleyway, opposite of Chivy, cradling his elbow with his free hand. Leaning against the wall, he then slid down it until he was just about sitting and dropped his head forward.

"What... were you even... doing?" Sefton grunted.

"Work," he mumbled. Then added, "Where did you get that stuff?"

"All of it?" he asked, blatantly ignoring the question. Soon after, he simply smacked the back of his head against the building he was leaning against. The building almost seemed to... shift—a few pieces of rubble even trailed down the brickwork. Of course, it could have just been an old building.

He closed his eyes, slowly tightening his grip on his for-certain bleeding elbow. "You a treasure hunter or something?"
polarization: (〉 i made you believe)

[personal profile] polarization 2009-10-07 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Fine," he replied, knowing full-well that he wasn't. At the moment, he couldn't stop seeing the concerned face of that stranger, who, had it been anyone else that landed on him, probably would have yelled at him. Called the police. Sued him. Something. Anything... except look at him with that face.

"No. I don't," he replied, once again letting his head hang forward. If Chivy hadn't seen it, or at least hadn't put the pieces together, there was no way Sefton was going to help him finish the puzzle.
polarization: (〉 that is just so typically me)

[personal profile] polarization 2009-10-07 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
"I didn't even get paid yet," Sefton muttered, apparently thinking along similar lines as Chivason.
