It took some time to convince the officers that he had no idea where Sefton had gone (and honestly, why did it matter? They'd said the both of them were free to go) and to fill out the necessary paperwork, but Chivy eventually walked out with everything that actually belonged to him, as well as one thing that didn't. He couldn't help grinning as he tossed the Magic 8-Ball from one hand to the other — wouldn't it be just like Sefton to have bolted simply to avoid picking up his gift? Then again, he might have heard the officers coming with questions and decided to run off to avoid them. Either way, Chivy was hardly surprised by the turn of events.
Luckily, it wasn't too late in the day so there was still hope of making it to another town before sundown. The trick was going to be finding some way to pay for food (enough money for a room to sleep in was definitely out of the picture), but at least he wasn't spending the night in a cell.
