Mechanical Difficulties

It was early afternoon, and Kieron was far more bored than he should be. He didn't have work until six, there was nothing to do in his apartment, he'd finished the only book he felt was worth rereading lately and none of his buddies were around to talk to until after sunset... when he would be at work. He hated when things fell out that way.

Kieron dropped a book in the return slot as he made his way into the library, trying to think of what he wanted to do with his time. He was bored with looking through the published journals that only the college library had - those had lost their shiny after about a year, anyway - so that was out. He considered taking over one of the computers in the corner, but decided he didn't feel like breaking into someone else's student account to do so. Yet. Maybe he'd get bored enough. He could look around for people he knew, but something told him he wouldn't quite be that lucky today. With a shrug, he decided his best bet would be to find a book he actually hadn't read yet.

Figuring the top floor of the library would be his best bet in finding something new (he rarely went all the way up there - five floors was a lot, thank you), he decided he was too lazy for the stairs and instead made his way to the elevator. He pushed the button... and then played the waiting game. As far as he could remember, the elevator in this building was pretty slow...

Stephanie followed, letting her hand rest on the guard rail. "Do you often get ice cream before work?"

"Nah, only if the mood strikes me," Kieron answered with a shrug. "Used to be out of my way. Now that this place is up, though, it might end up more frequent."

"Which is exactly why I don't keep any in the freezer," Stephanie said. "The easier it is to get to, the more often you wind up having some."

"Yeah, but you think you'd get some sort of overdose on it, or something. Make you less likely to want any after a while." He laughed a little. "Funny how that works with everything but ice cream."

Once outside the library, he made a left and started down the sidewalk. Usually he'd be lazy enough to take the bus to work, since it was about a twenty minute walk from the library to the record store, but it was rather nice out and he had company this time, so why not?

This was a much better way to wander, especially since it wasn't the answer to a frustrating experience. "What do you do with yourself if you don't have classes, other than work and occupy yourself at the library?"

To tell, or not to tell... Ah, hell, that's what half truths were for.

"I'm part of a sort of reform group. We meet up every so often and do stuff, whenever our schedules aren't crazy." Kieron tapped his chin as he thought. "Other than that, not much. I work a lot, since I may as well be the store owner. What free time I do have goes into reading or tracking down people to chill with."

Stephanie wasn't sure whether that meant he was being reformed or doing the reforming. Probably best not to ask. "The actual owner isn't around much?"

"He opened another store in another city," He answered, "and I've been his employee the longest. So, he goes off, I'm stuck here as manager-and-then-some."

"That doesn't bother you?" She had a feeling she wouldn't be so calm about it, if she were in his shoes.

"It did at first, I'll admit it." He chuckles a little. "I think there's stuff in my blog from that time about how much of a bastard he is, or something. But really, I've been there for years, so I guess it's just kind of like a promotion. Also, I'm not juggling school and work. Just work and life."

She knew better than to try school and work at once — besides, what she was doing for school probably doubled as work anyway. "How long will it stay that way? I doubt he's going to close the new shop."

Kieron shook his head. "He's not. I'm pretty sure he already considers this one 'my store'." Cue air quotes as he rolled his eyes. "I mean, I'm already partially in charge of hiring people and everything."

"Do you have a lot of shifts to cover?" She paused, and grinned. "And if you want to talk about something else, you're free to change the subject."

"For now, yeah. I don't want to trust the stores to the other guys too much just yet. Majority of them just started." He returned the grin. "Oh don't worry, I'm saving up so I can turn the twenty questions on you sometime soon enough."

That got a soft "hm" of amusement. "I doubt you'll find that much of interest. But at least you're getting them started."

"It's more like I'm trying to keep them from messing up because I'll be the one who has to fix it," he joked.
