first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

Sefton fought off irritation at the brush off. "You shouldn't."

Grasping at mental straws, Sefton tried, "You must have more important things to worry about."

Wait... was he serious? "Why?"

"Wh-what?" Sefton scowled, making sure Chivy could hear it in his voice, too. "That's not what I meant! A-and you're not."
polarization: (〉 but it's only me)

Sefton made a quietly frustrated noise in the back of his throat, but had to concentrate on where he was walking for a few steps. After that, he replied, "No." He paused, then tried to set the train back on the intended tracks. "Why don't you have something more important?"

"What about a family? Friends? People to keep in contact with?" he tried, each time losing a bit of his attempted conviction. Sefton realized how hypocritical asking such things were when, to any onlooker, they were in essentially the same situations, but he knew the best how different their situations were. After all, there was no way Chivy had the same reason for traveling as he did.

"Why not?" Sefton asked, trying to hide his confusion. That was how it always worked with him... even knowing his ability had twisted his friends into making him the center of attention whether he actually deserved it or not, wasn't that how the groups worked, anyway?

Sefton stopped when Chivy did, suddenly feeling as though he'd made a critical error somewhere (and trying to ignore the continually-rising guilt). "Whatever," he muttered, hoping Chivy would drop it after that. In what he figured might work as a distraction, he added, "We're almost to the hotel."

He walked with Chivy, trying his best not to stumble. He had a feeling that once he sat or laid down, there wouldn't be any getting him back up for a while. "The place was next to the alleyway. Eli's. S'probably still covering for me."
polarization: (〉 you think i'm in love)

[personal profile] polarization 2009-11-19 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
"All right," Sefton agreed with a quiet sigh. He wasn't even surprised that Chivy had found him anymore; if anything, it was more that he was still trying to get Sefton to let down his barriers after so many rebuffs.

He shook his head. "No... that's all."

"Huh?" Sefton looked at Chivy bemusedly while answering with a slow headshake. "I'm all right." Much better than he would have been without the insistence on going to the doctor from him and Neal the week previous, but he held off from mentioning that.

"Yeah," Sefton said, then added, "This is it." He nodded in the direction of the small, three-story hotel at the corner of the street. It seemed the original constructor had built up to save on space, but had used little of the saved money on quality. It wasn't dirty or overly uncared for - simply a cheaper operation than most people would be willing to spend their money on.
