first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

His night had been a good one. An uneventful day running the mail about town, followed by packing up some cargo, and finally cobbling together a good meal. However, unable to afford a room after all was said and done, Sefton had decided the weather was nice enough to pick a place and set down for the night.

Now, he was sitting against the building in a somewhat soft patch of worn-out sidewalk, fast asleep. His dreams were muddled as always, and he didn't expect he'd wake up until sunrise. Until someone tripped over an outstretched leg and jostled him awake.

His first reaction was a single shot of panic as he immediately brought his leg up to his chest—followed by sympathy for the boy he now saw sprawled out on the ground, and the relieving realization that the boy had only tripped over his lower leg. He sighed to himself, and peered a little closer. "Are you all right?"

He found himself smiling back at the quick recovery, and replied a bit sardonically, "I think I'll live." He would have offered a hand up, but most people tended to slap their hands into someone else's, not slip it in like he would prefer. As it currently sat, he found himself watching the boy and rubbing absently at the spot where he had tripped.

"I was sleeping," he replied absently. It must have looked odd, Sefton realized, to find someone asleep near the street, with nothing but the clothes on his back; it wouldn't have been the first time he had been mistaken for a hobo, if that was indeed what this boy was thinking. It wouldn't be very far from the truth, either. The only problem was that he hadn't really planned to fall asleep where he had—he had been tired, so he slept, regardless of the space where it occurred.

Sefton set his chin on his knee, a bit curious. This guy hadn't been hit by his weird ability, right? So why was he so interested in the random freeloader? Maybe just human curiosity...? In any case, he replied, "Don't have an inside to go to."

He shrugged, then pointed to his cheekbone in an effort to get Chivason to notice the speck of dirt on his own. "Sort of."

"Not really," he said. He paused, long enough to yawn into his knee, before continuing, "I've already gotten away from where I wanted to leave. That's about all."

Sefton shook his head. "Got no money right now. It's fine out here." After a moment's pause, he added, "You should go to bed, though. It's getting late."

"Yes, you can," he said simply. "Cost or not, you don't have to do something nice just because you tripped." He hoped that was the reason the kindness was being offered, anyway. If his power was getting too strong for his shoes to negate even as far up as his knees, he was definitely in trouble...

"It's not that," Sefton said after a moment. "It's only that I'm fine as I am. I've slept in worse places."

"It's not horrible," he said indifferently. Sefton watched the boy curiously, more than content to stay where he was. "Did you get dirt in them?" he asked after a moment.

"You should wash them out." Sefton shifted, standing and absently brushing at his pants with one hand. "There's a fountain nearby you can use."

Either he ignored the jibe, or couldn't think of an appropriate comeback. At any rate, he answered, "They could get infected like that. ... It's different."

He gave a small smile in return, turning down the street and beginning to walk. "It's over this way. I'll show you."
