first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

The pillow hit, although lacking some of the satisfying fwump! noise that you would generally expect a pillow impacting with someone's head to make. "Would you stop that?" Sefton grumped, now reaching for the abandoned pillow to fling back at Chivy.

"'Cause it's annoying," Sefton continued to grump. Why couldn't that be enough of an answer?

"'m giving it back," protested Sefton.

He started to pull the blankets out from under himself while giving Chivy a frustrated look. "What?"

The frustrated look began to transform into something more... guarded before he turned away and placed himself under the blankets. (Yes, his shoes were still on. His paranoia was in full grip tonight, it seemed.) "Whatever."

"Know what they say 'bout assuming," Sefton replied, already quieting down. The lights were still on, but that didn't seem to deter him in the slightest.

Judging by Sefton's soft breathing and fairly peaceful expression, it wouldn't be hard for Chivy to do if he decided in favor of it.

With something approaching cosmic irony, the moment the lights were off coincided neatly with a bolt of lightning flashing outside the window, although the crash of ensuing thunder didn't arrive until a few second later.

For the next half an hour, all was peaceful. Aside from the storm outside of the hotel, at least. A few noises emanating from the hallway or one of the different floors drifted through, but it was nothing to really take note of.

Until some fairly loud thud came from the room directly above. Sefton flinched from the noise, though he didn't wake. What he did do, however, was begin to mutter restlessly and twitch around under the sheets. "N-no, don't... can't... turn it off. Please, I don't wanna make...!"

There was no response. Sefton simply continued to mutter at the monsters inside his own mind. "... don't want you to... don't love me. It's—" He shuddered, pulling into himself helplessly. His voice started to lose some of its volume and begin cracking, audible within the unexpected lull in the rage of the heavens outside. "S' this dumb... stupid power."

Hand clenching, Sefton made a sound suspiciously like a sob. "I'm so sorry," he murmured, voice choked with pain and sincerity, a tone he would never get to use outside of his dreams. Whether he was experiencing a nightmare or something else was hard to say, and yet whatever it was, there could be no doubt that it was distressing him a great deal. "Mama... Dad... Jer... 'm so sorry..."

Sefton turned his head into the pillows, trying to shut out the noise. He gave a halfhearted shake of his head and continued with his mutterings.

Well, okay, go do that, Chivy. Sefton would still be over here when he came back.

Reaction was simple: Sefton jerked, pulling in on himself further. He also stopped muttering, but that was likely a more temporary change. However, he didn't wake.
