first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

Sefton wasn't sure he liked it here. Sure, the atmosphere was great. The pier had an excellent view, and the weather was perfect for swimming. But it was also full of people. Which, admittedly, was fine for business and good for finding a job, but Sefton found himself jumpier than he had been in a long time. So many people passing by, congested walkways, and the horribly close-and-friendly vibe most tourist areas tended to exude... It was almost too much for him to stand at a time.

For a moment, he recalled Chivy's insistence on finding a job with a hermit, back when they had barely met. Before they had continued to run into each other over and over again. Thoughts of Chivy made him scoff to himself and lean forward even further. At least most people around here respected the space of someone taking in the scenery at the railings along the pier - it was brief, but Sefton wasn't one to argue against respite.

With his chin in his hand, Sefton stared out over the waves and considered his next move. Should he stay, or try his luck hitchhiking and making it to the next town over, lack of funds be damned?

Sefton froze, automatically shifting away from the source of the voice while he turned to face Chivy. He didn't seem particularly happy to see him. "Fancy that."

Unfortunately, Sefton didn't feel like indulging Chivason (which, quite honestly, was a horribly rare occurrence in and of itself). "Then why didn't you show up sooner?"

"'Course not," Sefton said with a scoff. He gave Chivy a more appraising look. "You been doing the tourist thing?"

"I'm waiting for work to start." Sefton shrugged. He had woken up a bit too early, so had decided to go at least halfway until it was time for his shift. That wasn't too odd, was it? "You, though..."

Sefton shook his head, shifting so that his back was leaning against the railing. "The ice cream."

Sefton gave him a blank look, tempered by a little annoyance. "You just look like you fit in with the rest of them."

Jane loved this city. So many things to see, so many things to do, so many tourists who didn't keep a close enough eye on their things... it was amazing the things she could take. ... Rather, the things she could experience. ... Really. ... Okay, maybe not so much. She really was in it for the shinies.

Her wandering eventually brought her to the pier, where she quickly managed to nab a few fallen coins, but otherwise there was nothing major to be found. She was on the verge of giving up and finding a new spot when Fortune decided to smile upon her in the form of two bickering boys by the water. They were fully preoccupied with their own argument. They had their backs to the world. She could tell from where she was standing that they had things in their pockets. Score!

She allowed herself a moment to wipe the wicked smirk off of her face before she put on the air of a pissed off, probably PMSing teenaged female, and stormed over to them. She quickly and carefully removing one boy's wallet and the redhead's loose change.

"Oh my God, just shut up already, both of you!!" she snapped loudly, putting one hand on each of their backs and shoving them forward as hard as she could, intent on using the railing as a fulcrum to send them both toppling over and into the water. And once they made a splash, she wasn't planning on hanging around.

"Very funny," Sefton replied with a scowl. He shifted onto his side to better deliver his glares, and so missed the girl approaching until it was too late. "What—?" he tried to ask, but had already lost his balance and tumbled over the side with a surprised yelp.

Water rushed in around him and sucked him under. The pure shock of it all prevented him from immediately sorting out which way was up, but as soon as he had, he attempted to make his way back to the surface to retrieve some much-needed air.

Barely had Sefton broken his head out of the watery confines did he cry out, suddenly feeling needles slicing into his legs. The pain paralyzed him and he bobbed back under the water, unable to keep kicking and keep himself afloat. In a sort of calm panic, he reached down to try and feel what was wrong, finding a strangely slick substance around his pant legs.

Frost.

His shoes. The water mixed with the cold-infusion must have reacted together and now the field was frosting up the entirety of his lower legs. Thinking rapidly as he tried to pull his way back to the surface with his hands, he tried to come up with a way to get out of the water without losing his shoes.

Heart pounding and lungs burning, Sefton had little choice but to immediately grab onto Chivy's arm, lest he fall further. Thankfully, he already knew his ability lacked any sort of strength underwater, or he may have hesitated and missed his chance. As it was, it felt like his legs were about to fall off, and he was certain it wouldn't make it to the surface without some sort of aid.

Sefton gasped for air and choked out the small amount of water he had accidentally inhaled. He gripped Chivy's arm tightly, pretty much completely unable to help keep himself afloat. With what air he had, he tried to warn, "Don't touch... above—" He cut off, his head momentarily bobbing underneath. "—water. 'kay?"

Meanwhile, Jane was counting her spoils. $20, $40, $45, $50, $55, $60... Wow, quite a catch! She folded the cash and put it in her bag after adding the $5 she'd snagged from the other guy. With a self-satisfied grin and a deep breath, she looked out over the water on the opposite side of the pier from where she'd shoved the two bickering fools in. Today was a good day.

She looked at the wallet in her hands, emptied of anything of value (read: cash and change) and now useless to her. Maybe the boy would want it back... she couldn't very well give it back or throw it at him, though, so she'd just have to hope he was good at finding lost things. But, where to put it...

There. Perfect.

Jane made her way off of the pier, humming as she did so. She nonchalantly dropped the wallet and carefully kicked it so that it was wedged just under one of the boards -- out of sight unless you were really looking for it, and stuck besides. Done with the pier for the day, she left. The "orphanage" was waiting, and she had mouths to feed.

Sefton nodded tiredly. At the moment, he was less focused on what was actually happening than what he was feeling. His legs were literally freezing, and his only lifeline was the arm of the boy who refused to stop following him around. The water was cold, and his lungs were not happy with all of the accidentally ingested saltwater.

Where they were going wasn't going to matter much.
