first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

"Because," he said. "I just am."

"I don't make a hobby of picking fights with people," Sefton replied, rolling his eyes. He closed them soon after, reminding himself that wasn't such a great idea.

"Do whatever," Sefton said noncommittally. As soon as Chivy left, he planned to lay back down for a little while. Maybe the ringing between his ears would stop.

Slowly, Sefton awoke. The shuffling and urgent voice would not have usually been enough to wake him up, but he supposed he had his headache to thank for the sensitivity. He groaned quietly to himself and sat up.

"What...?" he asked, blinking a few times to focus his eyes. "Go? Why?"

As soon as Chivy mentioned another person, Sefton began to stand, ignoring the dizziness as best he could. He immediately slapped a hand against the wall behind him, ignoring the slight shaking that incurred, and consequently froze when the man's voice reached him. He tried to look for some sort of escape route around the man—making a mad-dash wasn't the most eloquent of ways out of a situation, but served well enough when the time called for it—but he was blocking the doorway too well to make it without just shoving past.

"Then just let us leave," he tried quietly.

"No," Sefton insisted stubbornly. In truth, he was a bit scared this man would be just as stubborn, and make him get some help. Not only did Sefton not have the funds for that kind of thing, it meant that the man would probably end up touching him a lot, too. "I'll be fine." His gaze flickered to Chivy when the boy got closer, but it seemed he was still respecting Sefton's distance, which suited him just fine.

Sefton shook his head. "I am fine, so getting checked over would be a waste of time," he said, not willing to let the man have the upper hand.

Noticing the look, Sefton gave Chivy a slightly annoyed look. This was definitely not an ideal situation. But... the mention of food reminded him of how long it had been since he had properly eaten. His stomach didn't rumble, thankfully, but he wasn't sure he could keep the slight longing off his face, either. "I don't think we'd be able to pay you for it," he attempted.
polarization: (〉 oops i did it again)

Sefton looked between the two during the exchange, and eventually sighed. Dang. He had been so close to wiggling out of it, too. Absently, he wondered at how someone could have accidentally lost their things underneath a floorboard. It seemed... unlikely.

Sefton restrained the urge to make a face, most likely a grimace. It looked like the odds were all stacked against him. "All right," he eventually said resignedly.

For his own part, Sefton sat quietly in one of the available seats while waiting. The walk from point A to point B hadn't done him any good, but he was attempting to hide it by bolstering his remaining strength together.

Chivy's statement caught him off guard, however, and he simply stared at the other boy for a moment. Good luck? Sefton? "What?"

"Somehow, I doubt that," he replied, trying to feign indifference.
