first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

Jeremiah laughed. "Hah! Are you kidding? He played it all the time." Sefton gave Jeremiah a sharp glance. In return, he got a guileless look. "What? It's true."

Sefton merely shook his head, seeming to sink into his seat a little further.

"He was the team captain at school," Jeremiah agreed. "I'd be disappointed if Sef fell off his game while he was gone." Even though it looked like it would be much more difficult to get Jeremiah upset about anything concerning Sefton.

"No sports?" Sefton asked, mostly to get the attention off of himself.

"Height requirements?" Sefton asked.

"Oh." Sefton returned to his halfhearted cleaning of the table, despite the fact that there was nothing left to be cleaned.

"Couple more hours," Sefton replied. It seemed to give him an idea, so he pushed away from the table. "I should get back to it. Boss'll get mad if he sees me slacking off."

"Mind if I hang around for a while?" Jeremiah asked, grinning. He obviously thought he knew what the answer would be.

Sefton hesitated, then he nodded. "Yeah, I do. Don't you have... basketball things to do?"

"Well, yeah, I guess," Jeremiah admitted slowly, "but... c'mon! I haven't seen you for months!"

Sefton shook his head. He wasn't supposed to have seen Sefton in the first place. "Go, Jer. I'll still be here when you're done with your gig."

"You promise?" his friend asked.

"Yeah," Sefton replied, avoiding eye contact. "Promise."

Sefton merely gave a tired nod to Chivy. Jeremiah clapped Sefton on the shoulder, who tried to move away from it, and said, "Okay. See you later then!" With that, Jeremiah went along his way, an extra bounce in his step. Sefton, on the other hand, looked torn between being happy at seeing his friend and... something else.

Just outside the general radius of the fair was a familiar figure. Sefton sat on the sidewalk, back edged up against a building, and watched the crowd wearily from his position. He had thought to see about finding a stall where someone would need help for the day as a quick paycheck, but quickly learned that his ability taxed him for every use, every minuscule bump of the shoulder and slap on the back or whatever else regularly happened in large, packed in crowds of people. It was a bit humbling to realize he must have lost some of his stamina in his time traveling, but it only made him more determined to turn things around; get back in shape.

Not right now, though. Sefton sighed, so very tempted to simply close his eyes and take a nap right there, no matter who might see him or try waking him up when they passed. It seemed he wouldn't get the chance to try when he noticed a familiar redhead approaching.

Great.

Sefton immediately scooted a few inches away. He looked mostly exasperated, but also a bit confused. Or was that concern? "Hey," he said back.

Sefton watched quietly. Did Chivy usually find this amount of stuff before he did something with it? "This what you usually do?"

"The... sorting, I guess," he said with a small shrug. "And waiting 'til you've got so much."

"People lose a lot of stuff in crowds, I guess." Sefton leaned further back against the building, continuing to watch Chivy from the corner of his eye.
