first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

"Why... what?" he asked, temporarily giving up thawing his feet. He wrapped the blanket around them carefully and gave the other boy an annoyed look. "Why don't I like help? Or why don't I like being touched?"

"They were different questions."

"I just... hate it," Sefton said, which ended up softer than he had meant to. He scowled, looking out over the water around them so he wouldn't have to look at Chivy.

"What's it gonna matter? What'll change as soon as you know why, when you already know I don't like it, anyway?"

Sefton exhaled and was thoughtfully silent for a moment. "It's just bad. I can't..." Even wanting Chivy to go away for his own protection, Sefton found it hard to reveal his secret and scare the kid off. "I can't say why."
polarization: (〉 can't you see i'm a fool?)

"They're... protection," Sefton allowed.

Sefton remained silent, letting Chivy work things out from the pieces he had. He was fairly certain Chivy wouldn't be able to put it all together, but if he began to, Sefton could always lay a red herring along the trail.

"Don't need it," he said with a small shrug.

Sefton glared. "That's different. Don't make a habit of that kind of thing."

"I was fine before you came along, you know." Apparently no longer content with watching the waves, he shifted forward and once again began to rub at his feet through the blanket.

"I've said it before. That wasn't on purpose."

Sefton paused, actually considering that. "Yeah, it was." His feet were tingling by now, feeling slowly returning to them, so he once again wrapped the blanket around himself and got comfortable. Or, well, as comfortable as he could in a paddle boat while still feeling partially-frozen.
