first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

Sefton wheezed, momentarily stunned except for the vague attempt to roll away.

The look Sefton gave Chivy was a bit wild, as he tried moving further away - Chivy being so close was seriously confusing and conflicting and claustrophobic. Why had he followed Sefton? There was no reason... not after he learned what it was that Sefton did. Coughing and gasping quietly, Sefton sat up and scooted further away. "Fine," he choked out between breaths.

Thankfully, Sefton spent the next moment simply making sure he could still breathe. His chest hurt, but it wasn't anything new now that anxiousness had gripped his heart and refused to let go. "Why?" he mumbled, wondering if the rain would simply drown him out. Maybe then he wouldn't actually have to listen to an answer.

"Can't stay," Sefton answered as if it were completely obvious. Now that he had enough mobility, he scooted over toward the building behind him and leaned his side up against it. It was boxing himself in, but any sort of tactile sensation to ground him was welcome. "Why follow?"

"Why?" Sefton responded in confusion.

Sefton had curled his legs up to his chest in the time it took for the thunder to rumble through the city. Being so close to the building afforded him a small amount of shelter from the pouring rain, but he was already soaked. Looking at Chivy, then darting his gaze away, he replied, "You know."

"Wh-what d'you mean, so?" Sefton frowned, confused by Chivy's question. "Aren't you... mad? Scared? Something...?"

"Why?" Sefton demanded. He couldn't figure out why Chivy was acting so... so calm about it. It just didn't make sense.

"Because, I... I can't help it," Sefton said, quietly. He just wanted to run - run and never stop but after the way Chivy had chased him down, he wasn't sure he could get away with it so easily anymore.

Curling his legs closer to his chest (and when had he started to shiver anyway?), Sefton silently shook his head.

"Not going back," Sefton replied stubbornly. It might have been easier to simply agree, begin following, then run off while Chivy was distracted, but he didn't have the heart to attempt it now.

Why wasn't Chivy blaming him? It was Sefton's fault - all of it! If he hadn't been there, if he had learned sooner, if he'd done something... things could have been so much different.

"Somewhere else," he said vaguely.
