first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

Licking his dry lips, Sefton nodded. "Yeah, 'course." Until the shoes actually came off, it was still safe for Chivy to do what he needed, but Sefton would watch and warn as soon as they were taken care of.

Sefton watched, unable to do much more than keep still and quiet. It actually kind of hurt with how raw and dry his legs felt right now, but he would rather this get over with than try to stop and come up with some other way to do it.

Nodding, Sefton scooted away from Chivy, just a bit. He shifted his other, still frozen foot, and tried to nudge the thawed one off. It stuck in a few places, but eventually tore free and he was able to twist his ankle and toss the shoe onto Chivy's side of the boat.

The places where the ice had frozen on the inside of his foot were sore and stinging suspiciously, but Sefton was wary of removing the sock to check it. Instead, he wrapped the blanket around his foot and curled it up in hopes that Chivy would not attempt to look for himself.

Sefton repeated the same process. Now that his feet were free, he seemed paradoxically calmer and more on edge at the same time. "Yeah."

"Excuse me?" Sefton asked, almost offended. Nonetheless, he clutched the blanket around himself even tighter than before, as if it would allow more heat to gather.

"Y'don't have to do anything, you know," Sefton said with a scoff. As tired as he was, he seemed to have hit a stable point now, and he was finding it hard to resist taking a nap, despite being in a paddle boat with the least-likely person to let him have his rest. He settled for trying to remove the second factor; he wasn't sure he could walk to leave the boat at the moment.

Grumbling about nothing in particular, Sefton let his eyes close. His intention was to simply allow himself more rest before Chivy wrenched the blanket away or something, but who knew if he would actually be able to keep awake at this point.

Sefton did not respond.

No luck. Sefton remained unresponsive.

Sefton exhaled lightly, murmuring in discontent, and curled the blanket closer to himself to try and remove the element disturbing his sleep.

Grumbling, Sefton pulled away further.

More grumbling and attempts to keep a hold of the blanket. After a moment, he actually whined, "Stoppiiit."
