first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

Sefton took a deep breath and opened his palms. The damage wasn't anything permanent, with a few small scrapes here and dirt clumps there, but the splinters buried into his hands looked fairly painful. He frowned to himself—the attraction must have ripped some of the smaller flakes off fallen bark pieces and into his hands.

After a moment, he turned his hands for Chivy to see, ready to bolt to the side if he tried something like rushing up to get a better look.

"No," he said, still looking at his hands and trying to figure out what the best way to extract the splinters might be in this situation.

He closed his eyes, letting his palms drop between his knees loosely. "I can't let you. That's why. If you can't accept that, then you should just leave."

"You can't... It—" He cut off, shaking his head. A ragged breath, and then, quietly, "Why?"

Sefton went silent, debating what might happen were he to let the kid try and pull all of the splinters out. It didn't seem like all that much contact, as long as he didn't let go after every single extraction or something dumb like that, but Sefton couldn't help but feel it was compromising to his rule of no touching if he could help it.

But... could he really help it in this situation? It was either Chivy or the next random stranger who would notice the injured hands, and they might not be so willing to agree to his demands or let him go without treatment.

"Gently," he finally said, a quiet tone of defeat present in his voice.

"Yeah," he said carefully. He turned his head to watch, just in case they had two different definitions for the word.

He frowned, shuffling back a few inches, just in case. "Have...?"

Sefton watched pensively, and forced himself to stay still. It had been a long time since he actually allowed someone close with the specific purpose of touching him.

He still seemed very nervous at being touched at all, but to his credit, he didn't make any noise at the extraction. He did flinch, though. "Just do it. Carefully."

Sefton bit the inside of his cheek, letting out a very quiet, pained breath. "Good."
polarization: (〉 can't you see i'm a fool?)

[personal profile] polarization 2009-10-07 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe," he agreed quietly. "Are you done?"
polarization: (〉 that is just so typically me)

Sefton stood, blowing on his hands to try and rid them of the dirt and lingering, stinging feeling in them. "Thanks," he said, though he didn't quite look at Chivy as he did.
