first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

"Fine." Sefton shook his head and turned back to the shelf.

Sefton slapped his hand down lightly on the shelf; it didn't make much noise, but the slight sting of it reminded him to not turn around and simply shoo Chivy out of the store. Somehow, he had the feeling that wouldn't go over well with his boss.

"Hm." Eli paused in his knickknack sorting and looked over to a small chart pinned up underneath the register. "Looks like just the regular cleaning. Windows and floor, maybe the shelves..."

"Not a whole lot," Eli said, tapping two small buttons together as he considered. "He's a nice boy, though. I don't know what's gotten into him today," he added, a little louder than the rest of the sentence, and Sefton sighed.

"Eh?" Eli seemed amused for some reason. "And why would that be? Are you perhaps... rivals?"
polarization: (〉 i'm not that innocent)

It would seem Eli was very fond of gossip, as he then asked, "What about?"

"Prickly?" Eli repeated. He glanced over to Sefton's back and looked thoughtful. "Well, he certainly seems to like his space..."

Eli chuckled. "Must make for an interesting friendship, that."

"Oh... going on thirty years now, I think," Eli said, glancing up to the roof as he seemed to count the years off in his head. "Yeah... sounds about right. Twenty-eight years in two months."

"It's not much different now than it used to be," Eli continued, as if reading Chivy's mind. "Filled with really old stuff back then and still full of really old stuff to this day."

"Maybe a trinket or two fell through the cracks," Eli admitted. "But after I tried to bring back one of those old-fashioned cotton candy machines, the missus put her foot down." He laughed, recalling the look on his wife's face when he had returned home with such a prize.

"Unfortunately, she didn't agree with that. I agree, though." Eli leaned forward, as if parting with some sort of secret. "I hear it was taken in by an actual traveling circus, though, so I can't really complain."

"That I did! You should have seen the look on their faces when they learned the thing still worked, and it worked like a charm, to boot."

"Here and there," Eli replied, once again tapping the buttons together. "Flea markets, garage sales... doesn't hurt to go talk with business owners when they go out of business, either. Sometimes they're sitting on gold and don't even realize it."
