first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

"Check what?" asked he-who-was-still-half-asleep.
polarization: (〉 can't you see i'm a fool?)

For a moment, he didn't respond. Then, Sefton groaned, seemingly attempting to wake himself up. "Right..."
polarization: (〉 oops i did it again)

"Who said that?" Sefton grumbled. After a bit of reluctance, he let go of his hold on the blanket.

"Sometimes," Sefton said petulantly. He wrapped his arms around himself automatically without the actual blanket to cover him, and winced when shifting his socked feet out to be seen.

"Pro'lly," Sefton admitted. Realizing that he still had more to do, he reached down to slip the socks off. They came off relatively easy, even if they did catch once or twice along the way. Once they were off, it was easy to see that Sefton's feet were pale, with the exception of a few dark red splotches where the ice must have pulled off through the socks less-gently than intended when his shoes were removed.

"Um..." Sefton rubbed his thumb along the top of one foot. "It's... prickly," he said, entirely aware of how ironic the word choice was. "Pins and needles, a little. Mostly numb."

Sefton grimaced at the prospect. "C'n I have the blanket back?"
polarization: (〉 on the borderline of the edge)

[personal profile] polarization 2009-12-02 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sefton caught it and gave him a sour look. "For a week, but s'not why I asked." Opening it about halfway, he surrounded his feet with it and began to gently rub. He hissed quietly as he did it, but didn't hesitate or look like he even considered stopping.

"Do what?" he asked distractedly. This really did sting more than he had expected it would, but he would rather do this sooner than later and not risk permanently losing and feeling in them or whatever it was parents told their kids to keep them from playing out in the snow for too long.
polarization: (〉 'cause to lose all my senses)

[personal profile] polarization 2009-12-02 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Sefton faltered, winced, then focused again on rubbing at his feet, but looked up at Chivy as he did. "No?"
polarization: (〉 that is just so typically me)

[personal profile] polarization 2009-12-02 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Sefton slowed, then shook his head. "No, I've... 've got it."
polarization: (〉 radio's playing all the usual)

[personal profile] polarization 2009-12-02 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Just don't like it," he answered carefully. "I like doing things on my own."
polarization: (〉 got lost in the game)

[personal profile] polarization 2009-12-02 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes," Sefton replied forcefully. Was that really so hard to understand?
