first encounter ; 0 days

If there were any luck in the world, Chivason would have been sound asleep by now. He'd had a wonderful dinner — courtesy of sweet, old Mrs. Jann — and he'd eaten enough to be pleasantly drowsy, and then some. To cap it all off, she'd offered him a bed (a bed) and tucked him in as only a grandmother could. He didn't really have much to worry about, still having a few valuables tucked away in his knapsack, enough to cover a few weeks even if she decided to change her mind about letting him stay free-of-charge, and he certainly hadn't been here long enough to need to think about moving on.

Whatever the reason, though, he stayed in bed long enough to need to roll over half a dozen times before he finally gave up. Carefully tucking the blanket back under the pillow, he snagged his knapsack and tiptoed outside. He let his mind drift as he walked, hoping it would help him relax enough to actually sleep. He had liked his last stop, even gone so far as to make a few friends. He should have known better than to try helping Lia find her necklace. She was too excited when she asked him if he would walk with her. He scoffed softly at himself— then tripped, tried to catch himself, and faceplanted in the dirt.

The rain hadn't been expected. Of course, Sefton rarely checked weather forecasts, so anything aside from a sunny day wasn't expected without some sort of warning. At least he had learned to carry an umbrella after the last time he had gotten caught in the rain. The investment was worth it, if it kept him from getting sick again.

Stepping onto the bus, though, he wasn't quite sure how much avoiding the rain was helping that. A weird, almost-achy feeling rested itself in his bones and he felt a little sick to his stomach. Great. It could have been worse, but getting sick was never a pleasant experience. Folding up his umbrella and stuffing it an outer pocket of his bag, he stood near the front while scanning the seats someplace he could settle down without having to worry about bumping shoulders or elbows with anyone else.

A familiar redhead caught his attention. Sefton opened his mouth, then simply shut it with a small, resigned sigh. He may have gotten away from the police the week previously, but it looked like he would never truly get away from Chivy. Decision made, he resolutely made his way to the back of the bus and plopped down next to Chivy without greeting him. It looked like the kid was trying to take a nap for the ride, anyway.

Sefton looked over from his idle staring contest with the raindrops on the windshield at the front of the bus when he heard Chivy moving around. He tilted his head and leaned further back in his seat. He was definitely catching something... ugh. Shoving that thought away for now, he said, "Hey."

"Nngh," Sefton replied honestly. He turned his gaze back toward the aisle. "You?"

"Would, but then you'd yell at me," Sefton said with a small shrug. "Even if s'not my fault."

"'m allergic to rain," he deadpanned. After a moment, he rolled his eyes. "I didn't even do anything and I'm still nngh."

"Y'know, that's not very encouraging," Sefton informed him.

And only Chivy, it seemed. "What's that got anything to do with it?"

"And when I'm sick." Which is what Sefton thought the conversation had been about, but apparently it had shifted without warning him first.

"Just... forget about it." That said, Sefton shifted to toe his shoes off for now. They had been splashing through the puddles on his way to the bus stop, and he would rather not deal with ice crystals forming at the moment. Not wanting to simply place his feet on the floor, he brought them up on the seat and wrapped an arm around them.

Sefton shook his head in reply. "Not really. Was just gonna get off at the last stop or something," he admitted. Talking wasn't the best idea, as he only felt worse the longer he sat there, but it was a distraction at the very least.

Sefton made a noncommittal grunt. He glanced out of the window past Chivy, watching the damp world zoom by outside. Without any sort of warning, he jerked—neither forward nor backward, although it certainly felt as though someone had just pushed him in both directions simultaneously. A slight, disoriented sound escaped. Some sort of loud, clunking noise came from the front of the vehicle while it started to decelerate; the driver had already begun to pull off to the side.

When he had a moment to catch his breath, Sefton realized something. He wasn't feeling sick anymore.
